As national researcher for Ireland on the research project ACCTING, I carried out qualitative mapping to gather information on bottom-up initiatives across Ireland that jointly address social inclusion and European Green Deal-related goals. The findings informed the research report: Carnevale et al. (2023) Report on inspiring practice cases.
ACCTING has mapped inspiring bottom-up initiatives stemming from groups of people, communities, and organisations in topics related to the project’s eight research lines. Taking place in 34 different countries, the mapped initiatives aim to inspire by showing positive involvement of society, and more specifically vulnerable groups, in response to climate change. They also serve to inform the call for pilot projects and the co-creation of recommendations for policymakers.
Some of the Irish initiatives featured in the report include Waterways for Wildlife, Communities 4 Climate Action, the Claremorris and Western District Energy Co-Operative, FoodCloud, Cloughjordan Ecovillage, the Bike Hub, and Age Action’s campaign for a new energy poverty strategy for climate justice for older people.
ACCTING (AdvanCing behavioural Change Through an INclusive Green deal) is an EU-funded project that analyses the impact of Green Deal policies on vulnerable groups and produces knowledge and innovations to advance behavioural change at individual and collective levels. Twelve partners – supported by a wide network of researchers – collect, analyse, and translate extensive data into a new research agenda, policy recommendations, and innovative pilot actions for an inclusive and equal European Green Deal. The project is coordinated by the European Science Foundation.
